# Initiate a Refund

> Submit a full or partial refund against a completed payin transaction. Provide the original ref ID, order ID, amount, and refund type to start processing.

Use this endpoint to initiate a refund against a previously completed payin (collection) transaction. You can issue a full refund or a partial refund by specifying the appropriate `refund_type` and `amount`. Once submitted, bluSwap queues the refund for processing and returns a refund reference ID you can use to track its progress.

## Headers

**x-api-key** `string` *required*

Your secret API key used to authenticate all requests.

**Content-Type** `string` *required*

Must be `application/json`.

## Request Parameters

**original\_ref\_id** `string` *required*

Reference ID of the original payin transaction you want to refund.

**order\_id** `string` *required*

Unique order ID for this refund request.

**amount** `number` *required*

Amount to be refunded. For a full refund this must match the original transaction amount.

**refund\_reason** `string` *required*

**refund\_type** `string` *required*

## Response

A successful request returns a `200 OK` with a JSON body containing the refund reference ID. Save the `ref_id` value — you need it to track refund progress using the [Check Refund Status](/docs/refunds/check-refund-status.md) endpoint.

**ref\_id** `string`

Unique reference ID assigned to this refund. Use it to poll refund status.

**status** `string`

Initial status of the refund (e.g. `PENDING`).
